UL 94 HB Flame Retardant Silicone Sponge
What is UL 94 HB Closed Cell Silicone Sponge?
UL 94 HB closed-cell silicone sponge is tested and rated according to the UL 94 HB flammability standard. UL 94 is a widely recognized standard for the flammability of plastic materials for parts in devices and appliances. The “HB” classification stands for Horizontal Burn, one of the tests under the UL 94 standard. It measures the ability of a material to burn in a horizontal position.

Our Accreditations
Key Features and Benefits
Flammability Rating
Horizontal Burn (HB): Indicates that the material has a self-extinguishing property and burns slowly when oriented horizontally. The material burns less than 76 mm per minute for samples less than 3 mm thick or stops burning before the 100 mm mark.
Closed Cell Structure
Non-Absorbent: The closed cell structure means the cells are not interconnected, making the material resistant to water absorption and penetration by other substances.
Enhanced Insulation: Provides better thermal and acoustic insulation compared to open-cell structures.
Silicone Material
Temperature Resistance: Can withstand a wide temperature range, typically from -100°F to +500°F (-73°C to +260°C).
Chemical Resistance: UL 94 HB closed-cell silicone sponge is resistant to many chemicals, oils, and solvents.
Durability: Offers excellent aging properties, remaining flexible and resilient over time in harsh conditions.
Applications of UL 94 HB Flame Retardant Silicone Sponge
Due to its flammability rating and material properties, UL 94 HB closed-cell silicone sponge is used in a variety of applications, including:
Seals and Gaskets: Ideal for creating seals and gaskets in electronic enclosures, automotive, and aerospace applications where flame resistance is crucial.
Insulation: These silicone sponges are for thermal and acoustic insulation in industrial equipment and appliances.
Cushioning and Padding: Acts as a cushioning material in devices and components that require shock absorption and vibration dampening.
Weather Stripping: Effective in sealing doors, windows, and other openings against environmental elements.

More Information on UL 94 HB Flame Retardant Silicone Sponge
- Underwriters Laboratories has a flammability and safety standard called UL 94 HB.
- This material satisfies the flammability test standard UL 94 HB.
- The horizontal burn test calculates the burning rate through which a flame is applied to one end of a horizontally oriented polymer specimen.
- For specimens with a thickness ranging from 3.0 mm to 13 mm, a material cannot burn faster than 40 mm per minute over a 75 mm span to be categorized as UL 94 HB. When burning a substance less than 3 mm thick, the burning rate should be less than 75 mm per minute over a 75 mm span. Regardless of thickness, the material will also be categorized as HB if it burns out before the 100-mm mark.
